Join us as at our Brick & Mortar shop for this hands-on workshop with guest expert JeeYeun Lee!

In this 2-hour workshop, learn how to use scraps of any size to make miniature crazy quilts for coasters. Through this project, you will learn the fundamentals of quilt making. We will be hand sewing in this workshop, but the techniques can also be done by sewing machine. Some hand sewing experience is helpful but not necessary. We will use running stitch and applique stitch. This workshop is for adults 18 and over.

This class covers:

  • Foundation piecing - how to sew scraps onto a base fabric in an improvisational way
  • Quilting by hand
  • Self-binding technique for finishing the edges

What's included:

  • Hand sewing needles
  • Batting
  • Muslin
  • Backing fabric (black cotton)

Bring your own scraps, if you have them: 100% cotton or cotton/polyester blend woven fabric is best. Or you can use our scraps – there’s plenty to go around.

Tools and supplies provided to use during the workshop - feel free to bring your own if that’s more comfortable for you:

  • Thread
  • A pair of thread snips to use during class and available for purchase afterwards
  • Fabric scissors
  • Seam rippers
  • Marking pens
  • Iron & ironing board

Date & Time: Tuesday, February 17, 6:00-8:00PM

More about the class: Throughout most of human history, making fabric from any material has been a painstaking, time-consuming activity. Because textiles were so precious, all scraps were carefully gathered to use again and again, often pieced and layered together to make new fabric for further use. We will carry on this time-honored tradition in this workshop.

About the teacher: JeeYeun Lee has been sewing since she was 9 years old, when she started sewing clothes for dolls. Since then, she has sewn garments, bags, quilts, household textiles, and many alterations. She has a MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art, and teaches sewing in the Fiber & Material Studies Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Location: 1210 W Granville Ave, West Storefront. We're located a block west of the Granville red line station and the Broadway 36 bus.

Accessibility & Parking: There are two steps down to get into the space. Our restroom is not ADA compliant. There is paid parking on Broadway and Granville Ave. I generally can find parking further west on Granville that's free (though it's been a little crazy with construction). Note: there's permit parking perpendicular and north of Granville Ave.
